What do Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, Howard Thurman, Rosa Parks, John Lewis, Thich Nhat Hanh and other great spiritual activist leaders have in common? They were “Universe Disturbers” in the best sense. Living in challenging times, these activists sustained and inspired others by their spiritual practices to work for justice, inclusion, equality and freedom. This message offers seven simple yet surprisingly effective spiritual practices they used with some self care tips accessible to all who advocate, hope and pray for a better world.
The Rev. Dr. Sandra Bochonok has been a long time ecumenical friend of KUUF since 2004. Now retired, she works part time as a virtual UFMCC spiritual director to clergy, seminarians and chaplains and teaches yoga at her local YMCA. She has worked as a registered nurse, an ordained military and civilian chaplain and later as a complicated grief hospice counselor. She is a veteran, author, retreat leader and labyrinth facilitator. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking, kayaking, camping and spending time with her wife of 33 years.
