The Social Justice Committee is pleased to sponsor the Military Draft Information
Session on June 8. This event is for young people, their families, and anyone else who has questions about:
- whether a military draft will be re-instituted
- current military recruiting efforts, and counter recruiting efforts
- recent information about a possible “skills” draft for people up to 35 years old
- No Child Left Behind “opt out” of recruiting lists
The event will be facilitated by Liz Goldstein, a former UU and currently a member of the Society of Friends (Quakers). She is from Port
Townsend and works to help people discern what to do with regard to their conscience and military service. Learn more about her work at
www.teenpeace.org
Goldstein will be sharing information, gathered from US government sources, to help people make informed decisions about military service.
She will cover the rules and regulations about conscientious objection. She will also have information to share to help people when talking to
recruiters. She will provide questions to ask that will help to provide a more balanced view, that includes some harsh realities recruiters may
recruiters not mention. Her goal is to provide as much information as possible so that people can make decisions for themselves with "eyes wide
open," whether they choose to enter the military or not.
Parents and veterans are especially welcome to attend to support young prospective service members as they explore questions of
conscience about current and future military service. |
