Children's Religious Education at KUUF

Greetings!  Welcome to the children's religious education program at the Kitsap Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.
We want our children to be able to comfortably articulate their personal beliefs as well as UU principles and values. We wish to help our children gain a positive feeling of identity as Unitarian Universalists and a sense of themselves as a part of the world family, with empathy and responsibility for others.
Below are descriptions of the programs offered and our general policy.

Toddler playgroup
Preschool & kindergarten (3 - 5 year olds)
1st - 5th grade
6th - 8th grade
9th - 12th grade

Toddler playgroup
Cooperative playgroup for crawling babies up through about four (when the child is verbally and socially ready to enter the preschool class.) The goal for this class is to help these little ones feel at home in our church community by providing cheerful, loving care and a few simple activities. Care is provided by parents as well as other capable adult and youth volunteers.

Preschool and kindergarten (4 - 5 year olds)
Young children are encouraged to learn how to play and work cooperatively, express their feelings about themselves and others, see congregations as places for making and caring about friends, appreciate how we are all alike yet different, view nature as a source of gifts that needs our care, and celebrate the different religions and cultures of the world.

1st - 5th grade

Children are divided into age-appropriate groupings each fall, and learn about UU values and identity, World Religions, peace and social justice, and life issues using curriculum resources offered by the Unitarian Universalist Association. Weekly classroom rituals throughout the year reinforce UU values and identity and build community.

6th - 8th grade
Walk Your Talk. Our junior high youth group works on active, hands-on, student-generated projects which are meaningful to them. Rather than curriculum-directed activities and discussions, the interests and concerns of our junior youth supply the material for projects and topics for discussion and exploration. Students are encouraged to articulate and act on personal beliefs and values in a climate of mutual respect and cooperation.

9th - 12th grade
Our youth group is a youth-directed, adult advisor-assisted group in which youth explore the religious, ethical, social and political concerns that affect their lives. Our youth are encouraged to articulate and act on personal beliefs and values in a climate of mutual respect and cooperation. Any or all of the following may be part of this group's activities: discussions, social events, service projects, and participation in KUUF, community and UU District events.

General Policies for Children's Religious Education
Children are grouped by grade levels into classes. Students attend the religious education class planned for their particular grade level. This eliminates confusion, facilitates short and long range planning, and increases the likelihood of each child benefiting from age-appropriate curricula and peer interactions.
Friends of children are welcome. Please get a visitor form from the Director of Religious Education.
Every family contributes to the religious education program. Many hands make for light work-- It's true! Best of all, when we all contribute, no one person feels overburdened and our children benefit from getting to know many caring Unitarian Universalists.
An atmosphere of mutual respect and cooperation is expected. If a child's behavior is interfering with their classmates' right to learn in a climate of mutual respect, or the teacher's right to teach, the teacher will use verbal correction. If unsuccessful, the child will be asked to join his/her parent(s) in the sanctuary for the remainder of the service.

Intergenerational Worship Services
On certain special Sundays, the worship service includes all ages. On these days, regular classes will not be held, but Nursery child care will be available.

Summer Program - 10 a.m.
From mid-June through Labor Day, regular religious education classes are suspended, and children participate in "Earthly Delights" crafts-and-activities sessions for all ages. Children go directly to their activities, not to the sanctuary with their parents.
